Which one do you think is the most useful for individuals to do in their daily life to help improve the environment?
1.walking or bicycling to reduce driving a car;
2.recycling and reusing wastes instead of throwing them away;
3.buying locally grown organic foods(without pesticide);
From where I stand, walking or bicycling should be the top priority in people's daily life in terms of environmental protection.
Firstly, both walking and riding bicycles help to decrease people’s use of private cars, thus reducing harmful gas emissions. These exhaust emissions can reduce the quality of the air, particularly in big cities that are congested with cars. If people can reduce such emissions, this would mean better air quality and less air pollution. A good case in point is what Guangzhou citizens did last year. Specifically, encouraged by local government officials, people from all walks of life actively chose to use shared bikes to commute to and from work. As it turned out, such practice on a large scale proved very effective in curbing noxious fumes and the sky became much clearer as a result.
Secondly, it is true that buying organic foods is environmentally friendly because these foods may not involve extensive use of pesticides. However, there is a critical factor that goes unnoticed: affordability. By that I mean, in some regions, organic foods tend to be more expensive and inaccessible than processed foods like cans. Seeing the high price tag may already discourage a large number of consumers from purchasing organic products. Worse, limited availability makes it even more difficult for the general public to change their diet by using organic foods. Therefore, the idea of consuming organic foods may seem theoretically feasible at best but impractical in reality.
