Some people believe that a country benefits greatly with a high percentage of young people going to university, while others argue that it only leads to graduate unemployment. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
高分写作示范 Whether a higher proportion of university graduates is a blessing to a nation has divided the general public – while it is a general belief that a younger generation with degrees is an advantage to the country, there do exist opponents who associate the boom of graduates to nothing but unemployment. However, I have to say neither opinion is justified enough to illustrate the entire picture – it would be imprudent to venerate either view over the other while ignoring all possible contributing factors in complexity of reality.
Before scrutinizing the benefits brought by more people with tertiary education, I tend to question the definition of the term ‘benefit the country’, which does not make sense to me without identifying what aspect of social life the statement is aimed at. When talking about the overall literacy of the majority of a country, we tend to see a high percentage of graduates as a positive indicator, provided that tertiary education endows learners with more academic knowledge than those who haven’t attended universities, whether it be mathematics, computer science or literature. Unfortunately, such a benefit does not translate as easily to some practical areas where empirical knowledge is more emphasized – many new employees after graduation are criticized by employers for their incompetency of addressing problems in the real business world.
Similarly, it also appears too simplistic to assume that the spread of college education only exacerbates employment. I grant that some graduates, particularly those studying liberal arts like philosophy or anthropology, may take forever to find a job in relation to their profession in a business world where practical vocational skills as accounting are prioritized. However, that is not the whole story, given that in many other sectors it is imperative for job seekers hold a university degree, one compelling example being doctors and lawyers, both of which require applicants to have graduated from post-secondary institutions.
From what has been discussed above, it looks to me that, whether the spread of higher education is a benefit or waste should be considered in accordance with what aspects of the society we are focusing on.
