Nowadays it has become more and more evident that those involved in outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain climbing are mainly middle-aged and elderly people, but not young people.

I think there are three factors responsible for this problem. In the first place, with various means of entertainment readily available online, many young people prefer to spend most of their free time in front of the screen, playing computer games, watching movies, or chatting with their friends in social media. Having been used to their virtual life, young people today do not enjoy activities in the natural environment as much as their parents used to.

Another important factor is that young people, high schoolers in particular, living under tremendous academic pressure, often have heavy loads of homework to do, even during holidays and weekends, so they can hardly afford 3-4 hours to go hiking or mountain climbing in the natural environment. Even without any homework, they would prefer to have themselves refreshed by taking a good rest at home.
